Prayer is the pillar of religion. As a Muslim, understanding the correct way to pray according to the Sunnah is an obligation that cannot be compromised. This act of worship is not merely a series of movements, but a direct form of communication between the servant and Allah SWT.
Dear Safarfriendly friends, have we ensured that our prayers truly follow the guidance of the Prophet? The Prophet said, “Pray as you have seen me pray.” (HR. Muhammad). This hadith serves as the basis that the manner of prayer must follow his Sunnah.
To make our worship more perfect, let’s discuss step by step the proper manner of prayer according to the Sunnah.
1. Intention in the Heart
Intention is the foundation of every act of worship. In the correct manner of prayer according to the sunnah, the intention is made in the heart, not spoken aloud. The intention is simply present in the heart according to the prayer that will be performed, whether it is Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, or Isha.
Dear Safarfriendly friends, the most important thing is to be fully aware that we are standing to worship Allah SWT.
2. Takbiratul Ihram
Raise both hands parallel to your ears or shoulders, then say “Allahu Akbar.” This is called takbiratul ihram. After takbir, we are no longer allowed to make any movements outside of prayer.
The position of the hands after the takbir is to fold them, with the right hand on top of the left, placed on the chest. This is part of the correct prayer procedure according to the sunnah, which is often overlooked.
3. Reciting the Iftitah and Al-Fatihah Prayers
After folding your hands, recite the iftitah prayer (if you are able). Then continue by reciting Surah Al-Fatihah.
Surah Al-Fatihah is a pillar of prayer. Without reciting it, the prayer is invalid. After Al-Fatihah, it is recommended to recite a short surah in the first two rak’ahs.
Safarfriendly friends, recite with tartil and full contemplation so that your heart is more solemn.
4. Ruku’ with Tuma’ninah
Ruku’ is performed by bending the body until the back is straight, hands holding the knees, and the head aligned with the back. Recite the tasbih ruku’ at least three times.
What is often forgotten is tuma’ninah, which is pausing briefly with calmness. In the proper manner of prayer according to the Sunnah, tuma’ninah is an important part that must not be omitted.
5. I’tidal
After ruku’, stand up while reciting “Sami’allahu liman hamidah.” When standing upright, say “Rabbana lakal hamd.”
Your body must be completely upright before continuing to the next movement. Don’t rush, Safarfriendly friends.
6. Perfect Prostration
Prostration is performed by placing seven parts of the body on the ground: the forehead (including the nose), both palms, both knees, and the tips of both feet.
In a hadith narrated by Muhammad, it is mentioned that he prostrated in a perfect position and without haste. Recite the tasbih prostration at least three times.
Prostration is the moment when a servant is closest to his Lord. Use this time to pray.
7. Sitting Between Two Prostrations
Rise from prostration and sit calmly. Recite the prayer “Rabbighfirli, warhamni…” until it is complete. Sit in the iftirasy position (sitting on the left foot, right foot upright).
This part often feels brief, but in way to pray manner of prayer according to the Sunnah, sitting between two prostrations must be done with tranquility.
8. Initial and Final Tasyahud
In the second rakaat (for three or four rakaat prayers), perform the initial tasyahud. the last rakaat, perform the final tasyahud.
In tasyahud, recite the tahiyat correctly. The sitting position for the final tasyahud is usually tawarruk (left foot under the right foot).
Do not forget to recite the salawat to the Prophet after the final tahiyat as a form of love for the Messenger of Allah.
9. Salam
End the prayer by saying salam to the right and left: “Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullah.”
With the salam, the correct prayer procedure according to the sunnah that we have performed is complete.
